Well another year has passed us by in what seems like a blink of an eye and we’re somehow half way through January!
Continuing on from my grape focused blogs from 2011 I’m going to start 2012 with a post on a new Spanish grape varietal to us – Godello (yes, really). This was a new one to me so I’m guessing it will be a new one to the majority of you out there. You’ll find it growing just north of the Portuguese border, in Galicia, an area put on the wine map by the success of Albarino. It needs to be tamed by restricting yields, as if left to its own devices it’ll deliver an insane quantity of grapes and you’ll only be able to produce a wine with little or no character.
When you follow the rules with this grape type the results can be phenomenal. The natural decrease in a vines productivity through age and then restricting the crop further, yields wines with excellent intensity. At their best they are a combination of racy orchard fruit, quince, precise minerality and a elegant texture.
If this blurb has piqued your interest then why not give our Atalaya do Mar Godello 2010 launched in our discovery club over Christmas a try. Even the infamous Bordeaux wine critic Robert Parker is onboard awarding it an incredible 91 points!
