Calaveras Winegrape Alliance Wine Sierra Foothills California ...

When Gary Hill retired in 2006, he planted 95 Zinfandel vines in his backyard and built a wine cellar under his house. When Peter Pesonen moved to Greenhorn Creek in 2003, he planted 70 Cabernet grapevines in his yard. Don St. Claire, a retired clinical professor of medicine at Stanford, planted a Chardonnay vineyard in his horse corral in Portola Valley. Ed Miske, a retired teamster, planted 85 Sangiovese vines in place of a lawn at his Greenhorn Creek home.

Where do all these grapes go? Into bottles and bottles of exceptional homemade wine from a group of guys living, where else but, Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp.

Back by popular demand, these award-winning home winemakers will be showcasing their handcrafted wines at CWA’s April Wines of the World event to be held Thursday, April 12 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Camps Restaurant in, where else but, Greenhorn Creek. This will be their third year of presenting, and it's one of the most widely attended Wines of the World every year. They'll talk about the home winemaking process, how they source their grapes, and, of course, the wine they will be pouring. Varietals range from Zinfandel, Cabernet and Syrah to Tempranillo and Sangiovese.

“We share everything and support each other however we can,” Peter told me of the home winemaking group. “We tend to shy away from harsh tannins in the reds. Good wines are being made here in Greenhorn Creek, and we invite the public to join us in tasting them.”

Attendance is open to the public with no reservations required. Cost for the seminar is $15 for CWA members and $25 for non-members. Gguests are invited to dine at Camps Restaurant after the presentation and enjoy a 10% discount; however, advance reservations are a must. Call 736-8181 for your dinner reservations now!
