When you’re looking for wine gift packages from Bordeaux, it makes sense to know a bit about the grapes which are likely to be included, so you can make an educated decision.
Merlot: In California it is a budget based choice, not as much in France where the average wine drinker finds heavier and more interesting Merlot than they do in the States.
Cabernet Sauvignon: The kind of wines is native to Bordeaux but takes a back seat to Merlot. Very complex, but sometimes lacking in finesse.
Cabernet Franc: The one grape which grows well on both banks, it adds a spicy and peppery flavor to the average wine similar to what many of us think of when we have Syrah in California. It is however, only a blending grape in Bordeaux because of a series of old, antiquated laws which don’t allow varietal specific bottling.
Malbec and Petite Verdot: Blending grapes only, typically used as less than 2% of a finished bottle of wine.
